The cardio burns calories quickly whereas the resistance burns calories slower but for a longer more sustained period while maintaining and improving your muscle conditioning. You don't need to lift weights for resistance work. Push-ups, crunches, squats etc work just fine.
Swimming is an amazing exercise, it's cardio and resistance in one.
Mix it up a little, it might get boring to just do the same thing every time you go running. Running is good, but you can also change it even more by doing some other cardiovascular exercises; swimming, cycling, and martial arts are also great ways to lose weight.
